The danger to children posed by exposed cords has prompted a widespread window blind recall.

RODALE NEWS, EMMAUS, PA—The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission has announced a voluntary recall of nearly 5.5 million window blinds, some sold exclusively at popular outlets like Target, Pottery Barn Kids, and IKEA. The window blind recall was prompted by reports of three child strangulation deaths and seven near strangulations.

THE DETAILS: Ten different products were announced in the CPSC window blind recall:

•  Woolrich Roman Shades and ¼" Oval Roll-up Blinds imported by Lewis Hyman Inc. The 600,000 manufactured Woolrich Roman Shades were available in twill fabric and microsuede and measure 72 inches long. They were sold exclusively at Target stores across the country and online between March 2006 and Dec. 2008. The roll-up blinds—4.2 million of them were manufactured—were sold at retail stores nationwide between Jan. 1999 and Dec. 2003 for $6 to $20.

What to do after you take them down: Call Lewis Hyman for a free repair kit at 877-354-5457.

•  MELINA Roman Blinds sold exclusively at IKEA. The IKEA blinds were sold around the country between Aug. 2006 through June 2008. The polyester blinds have a sewn-in label at the top edge of the blind with the IKEA logo, MELINA, and a supplier number 19395.

What to do after you take them down: Return them to any IKEA store for a full refund.

This is one of the reasons

This is one of the reasons why I never buy last generation products, it's not the first time I read about recalls and hazards in new products. Thank God it wasn't the case with anything I bought through Tucson classifieds, I shop there all the time.

Swedish retailer IKEA is voluntarily recalling more than three million window blinds because of the risk of strangulation. The Consumer Product Safety Commission says the latest recall was prompted by a report of an 18-month-old boy who nearly strangled on one of the chords.

The recall includes all roller, roman, and roll-up blinds that were sold at IKEA stores nationwide between January 1998 and June 2009.

Uh-Huh

And I'm willing to bet you'd be the first person to sue a company into the ground if it happened to your child. You clearly do not have children and if you do, you are plainly ignorant. Do the research, in 1994 companies were asked to fix the problem of looped cords and such to help reduce the number of related deaths, and did it stick? No. THAT my friend, is why there is a recall.

Please Do

Anybody and everybody with children should really pay attention to this problem. A lot of people have it in their minds that it won't happen to their children, but let me tell you, it will. Last night my 4 year old son almost hung himself on his mini blinds. Him and my 5 year old were in the room playing while I was cleaning up the house and it was a true blessing from God that he did not end up killing himself. 3 children and no problems until last night, I never would have guessed. But all's it takes is a child not knowing any better and you to walk away. You would never think that you could leave your child in their room to play and come back to..well..them hanging from the blinds. As harsh and blunt as that is, it's the truth. These warnings are there for a reason, please mind them!

Window blinds

I use cordless blinds in my house, I will do anything to keep my grandaughter safe. There are so many dangers, kids just as nature play put things around their necks, so it makes me feel better, not to have corded blinds. You have to beware of any thing that can get wrapped around their necks. One child dead from window blinds is to many, its A REAL DANGER SINCE THERE IN SO MANY HOMES.

I raised three children with mini-blinds as the main window covering in my home. I have always tied up the cords to keep them out of reach - it's a quick solution that keeps them looking tidy. Thankfully, we never had any issues with them.

blinds

why is this new news? blinds have always been considered dangerous for small children. so come on people! recalling 5.5 million blinds is absurd. it's like trying to recall anything a small child can choke on. or any poisonious substance thats out there. this is ridiculous.........

safety

You can't be in two places at once. If you have more than one child, then there will be a time when you're not all in the exact same place. Unless you live in a one-room cabin, a child will be out of your sight at some point in time. Do you use the bathroom with all three children in there with you? Accidents have been the number one cause of death and injury to children for generations. I hate hearing people say, "We didn't worry about such and such and our kids turned out just fine!" Yours turned out fine b/c they were lucky. Well, other kids ended up sick, disabled, or dead.

Amen to that Linda!

Theresa needs to get off her pedestal and on her knees thanking God that she didn't have to deal with tragedy with her kids. I also raised three, but there were lots of close calls with things that we weren't always warned about or aware of. Common sense will take you just so far, and all the emphasis on safety now is a good thing. You can't take anything for granted. Look at the Chinese-made products that are causing problems these days. I'm thankful that watchdog groups are raising enough attention that unsafe products do get recalled from time to time. It makes all the manufacturers a little more careful and parents' jobs a little easier.

Window Blinds and Safety

In years past we watched our children, taught them safety rules, and, again, we watched them and knew where they were. Life has changed but our children are still the dearest to us. So, why aren't they being watched and taught by those who brought them into the world and have a responsibility towards the safety of their children? More attention and time given to our children is important, not only for safety reasons, but for good upbringing, morals, thoughtfulness, etc. Raising children is the most important job you'll ever have in your entire life! Money and "things" can't bring the happiness that your children can, when they're young and when they grow up and you see the rewards of having raised your child(ren) right. Accidents do happen. Please do the proper thing and watch and teach your children. Be aware of where they are at all times, be nearby - not in another room on the computer or otherwise engaged. They are the most important in our lives - let's treat them that way. Be aware!

You can turn your head for a minute and tragedy can strike. I raised 4 kids but this time and age things are different. Young parents are on a fast track to survive.

Must be hard for you to be so perfect, the rest of us can never catch up to you! My kids are 37,34,26,and 23 and yes we have lucky that sort of thing didn't happen, however let's error on the side of caution and get it done.

the recall on these blinds are absurd
do you leave your kids unattended for hours at a time so they can play with the blinds ?
if you supervise your children, they will not get hurt by anything, i raised 3 kids and i watched them all the time, and never left them alone ...so parents get off your duff and do your job
