6 Reasons You’re Ignoring Global Warming

New research explains why global warming isn’t taken more seriously; you can help change people’s attitudes.

Use these 6 tactics to motivate friends and family who aren’t taking action against the urgent global warming threat.

Get past the mental block: Denial of global warming warnings is rooted in simple psychology.

RODALE NEWS, EMMAUS, PA—There are lots of reasons people procrastinate—they’re too busy, they don’t care, or they don’t feel an urgency to do what needs to be done. That last reason, it appears, is preventing Americans from taking action to stop global warming, according to a presentation at last weekend’s meeting of the American Psychological Association.

The APA’s Task Force on the Interface Between Psychology and Global Climate Change studied decades of research on environmental issues and human behavior, and came up with the factors that are preventing people from taking immediate action.

Here are the six biggest reasons—and why they shouldn’t stop you from taking action:

#1: Uncertainty.
“Research has shown that uncertainty over climate change reduces the frequency of ‘green’ behavior.”

Scientists have more than enough to make you feel certain. Most recently, a report published in June by the U.S. Global Climate Change Research Program, authored by 31 scientists from universities, government agencies, and nonprofit groups, outlined the evidence for global warming. For instance, concentrations of carbon dioxide are 30 percent higher now than at any period in history, including those measured during natural warming cycles that took place thousands of years ago. Global temperatures, which have steadily increased over the past 50 years, have risen in conjunction with concentrations of carbon dioxide. As have sea levels, which are now rising at rates double those of the last century.

#2: Mistrust.
“Evidence shows that most people don't believe the risk messages of scientists or government officials.”

The APA task force notes that scientists and government officials are often mistrusted when it comes to global warming. because they’re proposing changes that cost people money or make them feel as though their freedoms are being threatened. You may never be able to trust politicians or scientists you’ve never met, but you can listen to groups you do trust. A number of independent medical, religious, and social organizations have come out in support of efforts to counteract global warming, including the American Academy of Pediatrics, the National Association of Evangelicals, and the American Lung Association.

Reason 7: Proponents can't frame their message meaningfully.

This entire article suffers from the problem. People reject global warming because the case as presented by authorities has been confused and seems to change daily.

It also seems contradictory to experience (see some of the other commenters here) because most people don't understand what global warming does. They see 'warming' and assume it means 'things are getting hotter' when in reality what it means is that more energy is being pumped into the atmosphere.

That doesn't simply mean 'hotter' (which will happen), it means more extreme weather - hotter summers AND colder winters - more energy to start tornados and hurricanes.

The other problem is that global warming is slow - and some of the changes it will cause are 'catastrophic' in the sense that they will happen very suddenly - but not at a predictable point (like the collapse of the Atlantic Rotor which will suddenly plunge Western Europe into very cold winters). It's easy to miss the changes as they happen.

As usual, the scientific community forgot that they aren't blindly accepted and rather than framing their message, they just dumped a ton of incomplete and poorly worded messages into the public view leaving everyone confused and skeptic.

This time, though - this isn't a debate on evolution vs creationism or why religion is stupid - this one is for the big prize and the scientific community may have arroganced itself (and us) into oblivion.

Good job.

It's not just about global warming

Even if you don't think global warming is real, we really need to reduce our dependence on fossil fuels. This is for our own national security and for our own economy. It took millions of years for fossil fuel to form from, well, fossils. We can't continue to use the fuel forever, and certainly not at an increasing rate. It is becoming increasingly more expensive to find and extract new sources of oil. Yes, there is maybe three hundred years worth of coal it would be possible to mine, but this is still not the long-term solution. So I don't care if you don't buy Al Gore's book or attend one of his lectures. Just please let us invest in alternative energy (efficiency, wind, solar, hydro, geothermal, tidal, biomass, etc.). If you're worried about the cost, then only invest in things that will pay for themselves over time, saving you money in the long run. Lightbulbs are one of those things. It will lead to a cleaner, safer world with a more robust economy in the long term, and not require dependence on foreign oil. I think we can all agree on that.

Al Gore's ride in public

Global warming is all Al Gore has left. We had record low temperatures all summer, and as a corn producer, those corn plants can use the heat units. Al Gore is making millions off Global Warming and Rodale is buying it all, hook, line and sinker!

what warming?

Over the last 2 years we have been bombarded by record cold and snow. Our summers are getting colder and crops are failing. Produce has been very hard to grow so I think a little "Global Warming"would be a nice change for our area.

Global Warming

Glad to see the responses make so much more sense than the article. I'm so sick of this global warming stuff being shoved down out throats. Cap and Trade will end of killing what is left of the economy and all because of the biggest scam ever perpetrated on mankind. Al Gore and GE are getting rich off of this and will get even richer if people don't wake up to this propaganda. This article and a couple of others from Rodale on GW make me wonder if I can believe any of your other articles.

Propaganda Piece

I believe Ms. Emily Main (the apparent author of this slendid piece of Orwellian journalism) needs a therapy session with the APA Task Force members. Oh, and the Rodale folks need to stick to subjects they understand, like making mulch and growing vegetables. In the meantime we shouldn't we let real scientists (not Al Gore) handle this issue in a thoughtful, deliberate, and honest way, using data more dependable than the measured widths of old pine tree rings and other crap IPCC has used to create this bogus crisis.

Then again, maybe if I read lots and lots of enlightened articles like this I might see the "real truth" too. You know, the one Emily sees.

Global Warming

Just what is a "Substantial Minority" anyway? For every report that says Global Warming is real, there is one saying it's not. The Earth has been going through warming and cooling cycles as long as it's been in existance. We are currently going through one of the coolest summers ever here in Western New York and the last few winters have been extremely cold. Is that Global Warming too?
I've always been taught to "Reuse, Repair, and Recycle". In the 60's and 70's we had "Save the Planet" and "Be Kind to Your Mother". I think most people who propagate the Global Warming Myth now are doing it to make money and get their name in the news(Al Gore). How much is Rodale.com comtributing by stuffing my inbox with offers from every magazine they publish? If everyone did a little bit, we'd all be a lot better off. But I guess you can't make money from that.

Global Warming sham

Of note, there has also been global warming on Mars, and I do not believe there are any SUVs there.

Even if one believes in man-made global warming, the estimates are that if every country does all of the things to reduce carbon footprints, the global temp will decline a miniscule 0.1 degree Celsius. What a pathetic return on a huge investment. And, it hte global warming alrmists are wrong, all that money is spent for nothing.

First clue to distrust an article

When The American Psychiatry Association opines as to global physics. Next, please run article by the U.S. Hockey team on their opinions about fertilizer run-off.

Puhleez.........the global warming people are discrediting themselves.

Global Warming Hoax

I enjoy the environment, and I think we should all do more to keep it clean. I do not buy into all the global warming hype. You can show as many reports and as much research as you want, but there will always be just as much supporting information to the contrary. The planet has been heating up for millions of years, that's why we can live where there used to be glaciers.

Human's are so vain that we really want to believe that we are responsible for everything. We are a part of the planetary ecosystem.

As I said, we should enjoy the beauty of nature more, but the hype about global warming is about money, and people trying to capitalize on good intentions.

global warming

It used to be "global warming." Then, as Laurie mentions above, record cold winters arrived, and now the term is "climate change." There are many factors that influence the weather patterns and overall climate of this planet, most of which are natural occurences. Yes, I do believe that human activity plays a role in it. I'm just not sure how much. And after decades of global warming to now have record cold winters, maybe the changes in our lifestyles are having the desired effect. But, instead of congratulating our efforts, even that is turned into something undesirable and called "climate change." You can't win for trying.

global warming

Have you people taken a look at the geologic record, or sunspot activity? Have you taken a look at the thermometer outside my window (two record cold winters and a near record cold summer)? Have you taken a look at the research of serious scientists who haven't been worshiping the Goracle? Please do: http://wattsupwiththat.com/2009/08/06/long-debate-ended-over-cause-demis...
