RODALE NEWS, EMMAUS, PA—After-school snacks don’t need to be pre-packaged and replete with a prize to make the grade with your munchkin. And healthy after-school snacks can be as fun and yummy as they are nutritious. Sound like a tall order? Don't worry, we found help. "As a guiding principle, always aim to hit at least two food groups in a snack," says Bethany Thayer, R.D., manager of Wellness and Program Strategies at the Center for Health Promotion and Disease Prevention at the Henry Ford Health System in Detroit and spokesperson for the American Dietetic Association. "Pudding and graham crackers, for instance, would be dairy and grain." And, no doubt, a hit with the kids.

Here are five additional healthy after-school snack suggestions, sure to please both parents and kids:

#1: Best Snack for Kids Who Love Sweets: Trail Mix ‘n’ Milk

Fruit is nature’s candy, no? Thayer suggests serving up some dried fruit, since it tends to be a little sweeter than fresh fruit. Mix together dried cranberries, pineapple, and raisins with ready-to-eat cereal and nuts, for an easy, crunchy trail mix. And serve this healthy after-school snack with a glass of chocolate milk on the side, just as a nod to that sweet tooth.

I think that parents should

I think that parents should actually fight more so their kids eat healthy at home and at school as well. There are so many youngsters that have a masters of public administration online and want to change the way our education system works into something better. Let's give them a chance, ok?

I agree

Dried fruits are really underrated among kids.. but it really matters how one teaches them: if they are used from a young age with moderate sugar taste, then they will appreciate fruits, but if they are given candy too often they will not, it will be like offering a woman's cigar to a heavy smoker. I'm doing my masters in health administration and we often talk about prevention so I guess prevention is the key word here too, prevention in getting "addicted" to sugar that is.

pumpkin

How much pumpkin per cake mix? What size can? I assume a 12 oz., but am not sure. Can't wait to try it!

can size

Janice, Bethany tells us that a 16 oz can of pumpkin puree will do the trick. Enjoy!

Pumpkin cupcakes

The pumpkin cupcake recipe sounds great - quick and tasty. Since cans of pureed pumpkin come in several sizes, I jsut wanted to find out which size I should use.

Thanks,
