RODALE NEWS, EMMAUS, PA—Last week, First Lady Michelle Obama recounted how a wake-up call at the pediatrician's office prompted minor changes in her kitchen that added up to super-sized health improvements. Her comments, delivered at the YMCA of Alexandria in Virginia last Thursday, were part of an event unveiling the Surgeon General's Vision for a Healthy and Fit Nation 2010 report, a plan developed by Surgeon General Regina Benjamin, MD, which stresses personal responsibility to prevent being swallowed up by the obesity epidemic.

THE DETAILS: The First Family walks the walk. "The beauty was that, for me, over the course of a few months, we started making really minor changes. And I share this story because the changes were so minor," Mrs. Obama explained. These changes include things like cutting out TV time during the week to include more active play time, paying attention to portion sizes, limiting sugary drinks and replacing them with water, and eating more colorful veggies at dinner.

By the time of the Obamas' next doctor's visit, the small changes had produced enough results to grab the pediatrician's attention. "He looked over the girls' charts and he said, 'What on earth are you doing?' And I said, 'Really, not much,'" Mrs. Obama recalled, adding that she wants to share that good news with American families. "Small changes can lead to big results," she said.

Michelle Obama Shows Wonderful Examples

We will learn from Michelle Obama's fantastic example.

If we want to live a full life, we need nourishing food free from pesticides, warm personal relations, plenty of fun exercise and a willingness to claim personal responsibility.

A garden improves vitamin quality, saves gas and who knows how much pollution. Besides it's a great family activity.

I say, "Go Michelle!" and everyone else for that matter.

What's wrong with gardening & eating healthy?

I think Michelle Obama is making an effort to do the right thing. Plant a garden and eat your own organic food. It costs pennies for seeds compared to buying and it does encourage young people to make better choices that taste better and are better for them. Can't we try and be more positive to make a positive future. Instead of feeling sorry for yourself, that's really not making you feel better why don't you get out and garden you will feel better and maybe you can sell your produce at the local farmer's market. Change you thoughts and change your future.

Wow

First the claims you make about the First Lady's hotel snack and her "personal staff" have been completely debunked on Snopes.com.

Regardless, First Ladies do this kind of thing. Hillary Clinton was the first in recent memory to try to have healthier food served by the White House. Michelle Obama has gone one step further in creating a big garden with the help of the White House chefs who are thrilled to have fresh produce and vegetables, and kids from local schools come help in the garden and try it's bounty.

Where is this a bad thing, why are you so negative about someone doing something positive? If she's able to influence kids and parents to eat healthier, where is this a problem for you? Single positive acts add up.

If you truly are feeding your children high salt/fat/sugar processed foods because you don't feel you can afford otherwise, go soak some beans and make a nice soup, bake your own bread, make a root vegetable stew... these things are all tasty (with the right seasoning and spirit!) and don't break the bank, at all. And if you truly are unemployed, you have the time to do it, and what better way to show your kids you care.

Simplify, stay positive, get creative, get healthy.

Michelle Obama

Ms. Easter, this is really hilarious. Wake up! The Obama family is not the cause of Americans losing so many jobs; you can blame our current financial state on the previous president. Okay - you're unemployed. Find another job. You might have to eat crow and take a job that's beneath your “so called” standards for a while until a better one more suitable for you comes along. Quit being so dramatic; you're not the only person in this country "jobless." Start a new career, get some training or more education, basically what I'm saying is stop complaining and get off of your lazy butt. Just a little food for thought - I believe you are frustrated from the seemingly lack of jobs right not but you're more perturbed by the fact that The Obama's are in office (with all of their servants.) Can you do Michelle’s job? I think “NOT”! So get a life and a job. Oh and next time be sure to get all of your facts straight on the president’s wives before you begin blasting out information and comparing them to one another.

If you're in such dire straits, how can you afford to pay your Internet bill?

Get a grip

Not everything has to be political. The point is that little changes can produce huge results, without putting in tons of effort or spending lots of money. Cheap carbs don't have to be unhealthy. Grain like organic buckwheat and quinoa are often less than a dollar a pound. Do you know how many healthy meals that can provide? The First Lady's trying to do a good thing. Stop falling into the trap of opposing idea that comes out of the White House. How can you argue with helping overweight kids trim down and live healthier lives??

Michelle Obama

Michelle Obama spent over $447 for a snack in her hotel room. Michelle has 22 personal servants while most presidents wifes had only one and that was often paid for with their personal money.
We are already following her suggestions on food since we are out of work and families are starving for food while the Obamas spent our tax money freely. We don't sit our kids in front of TVs because we cannot afford to pay for television. The food we feed them is cheap carbohydrates.

On top of that the suggestions from Michelle Obama have been going around for years. It is not original. PLEASE do a little better in your future articles.
