RODALE NEWS, WASHINGTON, DC—In the gilded and cream State Dining Room of the White House, packed with guests seated in gold ballroom chairs and reporters pressed together in their slush- and salt-stained shoes, First Lady Michelle Obama kicked off her "Let's Move" campaign, an historic initiative that aims to do nothing less than eliminate childhood obesity in a generation. A daunting task, to say the least.

In a private conversation just before the program was announced, Sam Kass, White House Food Initiative coordinator, and one of the key players in the Let’s Move campaign, which was a year in the making, said, “This is huge.” And he is right.

Getting children to eat right and exercise more has been the stated goal of children's advocates, obesity specialists, pediatricians, sometimes even the federal government, not to mention parents, for at least two decades. All have failed. And today almost one-third of American children are either overweight or obese.

But this time maybe be different. Never before has the power of the White House been behind such a sweeping plan. Every sector of society is being engaged, including government leaders, educators, science and medical professionals, sports figures, mayors, businesses.

Yet Mrs. Obama is realistic about how difficult this reordering of society will be. “We know we won’t get there this year, or during this administration,” she said. “We know it’ll take a nationwide movement that continues long after we’re gone.”

Read on for details about the Let's Move campaign, and suggestions for helping your family stay at a healthy weight.

Obesity and diabeties

I commend the Obama administration for taking a lead in this battle against childhood obesity . Tackling this issue now will lead to an affordable universal health care system in the future, by addressing one of the roots of illness I'mhealthy eating and lack of exercise. When one reads about this, it almost seems foolish as it is just common sense. Maybe by encouraging urban agriculture as a means of achieving both healthy food and exercise, not to mention sense of community, this can be acheived in a generation. Good luck!

re: Kids are fat and sick

I'm not overly concerned about parents who are living in McMansions and driving massive SUVs around. The kids who suffer most are kids from low-income families whose parents can barely cover their rent, let alone a diet of organic food for their families.

It's not a perfect world. The poor will always be with us, and while sad, unhealthy processed food is cheaper than healthy food. But, healthy food should be a right for everyone, not a privilege enjoyed only by the wealthy, and kids from low-income families deserve to have at least one healthy meal a day. If that has to come from school, I'm more than happy to pay more taxes so they can enjoy it. At least there, they can learn the difference between healthy and unhealthy.

Kids are fat and sick

because of their parents being lazy. It has nothing to do with schools. Parents need to cook healthy meals for THEIR kids, pay for it out of their own money, and stop watching tv and start exercising.

If parents weren't so lazy themselves, then the kids wouldn't be either.

Why are kids getting lunches at school? You're supposed to PACK lunches for YOUR OWN CHILDREN. Parents need to stop spending $$ on themselves and start spending it on their kids. No more nice cars, houses, vacations, etc. Instead they need to be forced to spend 100% of their income on taking care of their children. This means expensive organic food, and they have to make it.

re: obesity

You obviously don't have kids or you would know that the food served in school cafeterias is nothing any sane dietician or health expert would touch with a ten-foot pole, let alone recommend that children eat it. And if you read the article more carefully, it says that $10 billion is going to pay for school lunches and breakfasts, not for "R&D". That means that, instead of each child having to eat food that costs less than $1 per day, school's get a whopping $1.20 per kid. Besides, would you rather spend that $10 billion on healthy food, or spend $150 billion in the healthcare they'll need to combat all the chronic diseases they'll get from eating corn dogs, corn nuggets, chicken nuggets, canned cream corn, chocolate milk, reconstituted scrambled "eggs"...?

rolling over in their graves

To: where are the founders (rolling over in their graves at your incoherent e-mail),
Why don't you check out the cost of obesity to our society.
The founders were articulate, you are not.

Ban HFCS and you have the answer

Dear Sirs,

This is soooo easy. Simply tell the corn growers to find a way to sell auto/home heating fuel with their corn and to STOP making High Fructose Corn Syrup. HFCS (High Fructose Corn Syrup) and high sodium in processed foods are killing our kids....period.

Age of Child/Baby : Daily salt (sodium)
0-12 month* : 1g (400mg sodium) or 1/6 tsp salt
1-3 year : 2g (0.8g sodium) or 1/3 tsp salt
4-6 year : 3g (1.2g sodium) or 1/2 tsp salt
7-10 year : 5g (2.0 g sodium) or 5/6 tsp salt = 800 mg
Above 11 year : 6g (2.4g sodium) or 1 tsp salt

There is even high sodium in cheerios! Ban all soups...just look at the sodium in your soup and keel over.

Parents, start to read the labels and really, only babies need full-fat milk. Start to look at LOW SUGAR, LOW FAT alternatives like trying sugar free almond milk once in a while.

READ your cereal boxes and be amazed.

Try hard boiled eggs for breakfast, or whole wheat English Muffins, BAN all juice boxes, pre-cook a week's supply of seasoned chicken breasts, use part skim mozzarella, buy loads of bananas (freeze em with sprinkles or use low sugar/low fat syrup with them). Just THINK and your kids will get thin....

Exercise with your kids....come on!!! You will get fit if you follow these simple rules and PLEASE LEAD BY EXAMPLE. It's not too late. I'm almost 44 with a kindergarten kid and have lost 12 lbs just by reading labels, changes a few bad habits, and starting to exercise 4 times a week.....You can do it too!!!

obestity

I am all for this raising healthier children. But, to spend an estimated 10 billion dollars to research and develop healthier school diets. This information has been developed by dieticians and health experts, let’s just use it.
