See if your local farmer's market made the cut for America's favorite.

Your food dollar goes a lot farther when you spend it locally.

RODALE NEWS, EMMAUS, PA—It's been a good summer for local farmer's markets. Figures released from the U.S. Department of Agriculture in early August revealed that the number of markets in the U.S. has grown 17 percent, with some states seeing up to 46 percent more farmer's markets this year than last. Shortly thereafter, the Union of Concerned Scientists (a nonprofit group comprised of former MIT researchers) released a report showing that investment in local farmer's market initiatives could create over 13,000 jobs in a five-year period.

And what's not to love about them? Friendly farmers, fresh food, a chance to invest in your local economy. The nonprofit agricultural conservation group, American Farmland Trust (the people behind those catchy "No Farms, No Food" bumper stickers you see), has been showing love to America's farmer's markets for years now, and the group just released the results of its third annual "America's Favorite Farmer's Markets" contest. The organization solicits market nominations and votes from the public, and this year, 90,000 people voted for their favorites. The results are grouped into four categories, based on size. And the top five winners in each category are…

I don't know what criteria you used to decide which were the best farmer's markets, but it was definitely a biased list.

The one in Madison, WI is one of the best, and Chicago has some very good ones too.
