RODALE NEWS, EMMAUS, PA—Losing 10 pounds or so can do more for your body than get it into a skinnier pair of genes. Australian researchers have found that losing about 10 pounds can recharge your immune system and reduce inflammation, a bodily response to poor diet, injury, or irritation, that is the root of many chronic diseases.

THE DETAILS: In the small study, researchers monitored 13 obese people with either type 2 diabetes or prediabetes as they completed a 24-week calorie restriction diet, with a gastric banding procedure—surgery that limits how much a person can eat at time—occurring midway through the study.

Participants focused on eating between 1,000 and 1,600 calories a day. Researchers monitored participants' immune-system cell numbers throughout the study and found that losing about 10 pounds helped lower their inflammatory levels so they matched that of a lean person.
