peanut butter recall and salmonella

Kellogg Pulls Products Amid Tainted Peanut Butter Scare

Suspected source of Salmonella contamination supplies peanut butter to Kellogg Company

While jars of peanut butter sold in stores haven't been implicated, some packaged foods may contain tainted peanut butter.

UPDATE 1-21: PetSmart has announced a voluntary recall of its peanut butter-containing dog treats.

UPDATE 1-20: The FDA has created a searchable list of consumer products that could be affected by tainted peanut butter.

RODALE NEWS, EMMAUS, PA—The snack and cereal giant Kellogg Company is voluntarily pulling some of its peanut-containing products from store shelves and halting production as a precautionary measure after learning one of its suppliers is the suspected source of the current nationwide salmonella outbreak. No one has been sickened by Kellogg products, but the company says it wants to be on the safe side.

THE DETAILS: Last week, the Food and Drug Administration revealed that hundreds of people from 42 states were infected with salmonella. At least three deaths have been linked to the outbreak. The suspected source was later identified as Peanut Corporation of America, whose peanut butter is sold under the brand names Parnell’s Pride and King Nut. None of the recalled peanut butter is sold directly to consumers; it’s sold in bulk to institutions, food-service industries, and private-label food companies.

To err on the side of caution, the Kellogg Company has put a hold on these Austin and Keebler branded products:

• Toasted Peanut Butter Sandwiches
• Peanut Butter and Jelly Sandwich Crackers
• Cheese and Peanut Butter Sandwich Crackers
• Peanut Butter-Chocolate Sandwich Crackers
