RODALE NEWS, EMMAUS, PA—Last month, regulators in water-starved California approved what will be the largest seawater desalination plant in the Western Hemisphere. The plant will generate 50 million gallons of per day, enough to supply about 360,000 people with their average daily water needs. The state has 20 other similar (but smaller) projects in the works. Elsewhere, drought warnings are on the horizon, and it’s likely only a matter of time before your local city government starts enforcing summer water restrictions.
THE DETAILS: Desalination makes ocean water suitable for drinking—and the salty leftovers of the process, often referred to as waste brine, get disposed of as landfill waste or pumped back into the ocean, sometimes mixed with treated sewage. Raising the salinity of the ocean (which can harm wildlife) is one major problem with these plants, as is their massive energy use: Desalination plants can use around 50 million kilowatt-hours per year, nearly 100 times more than a small steel mill would use.
WHAT IT MEANS: Chances are there’s no desalination plant coming to your neighborhood in the near future. Which is probably a good thing. As with electricity, the quickest solution to satisfying our water needs is to become more efficient—which will cut your water bill, too.

Plants take in water as needed to 1) supply essential nutrients
to the plant, 2) to compensate for moisture loss .
Compost and compost tea both increase the bacteria and fungi availabe to the plant to help the plant absorb essential nutrients. Plants can't absorb nutrients except with the help of soil bacteria ans soil fungi.
The addition of bacteria via compost and compost tea can reduce the need for water while growing your plants, lawn or pasture better than with water alone. The added nutrient value of garden produce is known and measured. The value of compost tea on pasture was measured by Ms B Ross, a rancher in Texas.
