The benefits of yoga aren't limited to stress reduction and better concentration. A 2001 study out of the Chhatrapati Shahuji Maharaj Medical University in Uttar Pradesh, India, found that yoga reduced lipids and fat in the body. In the study, researchers grouped 170 men and women into two groups; 85 practiced yoga (35 to 40 minutes a day, five days a week, for six months) and 85 did not. The subjects all had coronary heart disease.
Researchers tested the body fat and lipid composition of each subject both at the beginning and at the end of the six-month study period. The yoga group had lowered systolic and diastolic blood pressures, heart rates, body fat percentages, cholesterol, triglycerides, and LDLs; the group that didn't practice yoga showed no significant change.
