Former New York Times Columnist to Focus on Coverage of the First Lady’s Childhood Obesity Initiative; Will Offer Related Cooking Tips
EMMAUS, PA, and NEW YORK, NY, February 8, 2010—Rodale Inc. is proud to announce that, beginning today, renowned food writer Marian Burros will be sharing her journalistic talent and food industry expertise through a series of articles and online updates focusing on First Lady Michelle Obama’s initiative to combat childhood obesity in America on Rodale.com, the company’s online source for daily news, information and advice on personal and environmental health.
Burros, the former food writer and columnist for the New York Times, has published 13 cookbooks and has written extensively about organic, local and sustainable food and agriculture throughout her more than 35 years of reporting on food—which includes everything from restaurant reviews to being the first journalist to interview First Lady Michelle Obama upon her launch of the White House organic garden last March.
As a writer for Rodale.com, Burros will cover Mrs. Obama’s Childhood Obesity Initiative just as she covered all of the First Lady’s activities surrounding the White House organic garden. Her first article on the topic runs on Rodale.com today, in advance of the official launch of the initiative tomorrow, February 9th.
“Marian’s the ideal person to cover this important White House effort because of her expertise in food and health combined with her elegant and precise writing,” said Rick Chillot, Senior Editor of Rodale.com. “She is our dream team for this beat, ensuring that Rodale.com is the preeminent place to learn about the First Lady’s initiative.”
Following the launch on Tuesday, Burros will follow Michelle Obama as she works to support the program in the coming months. In addition, she will report on general issues and news related to childhood obesity.
“This is a wonderful opportunity to follow the First Lady’s efforts to tackle what, until now, has been an intractable problem,” said Burros. “Can she change the food environment in this country that encourages people to eat all day long? Is the one thing that has been missing from all previous efforts to reduce childhood obesity a popular leader who has the ear of the President? These are among the many questions I aim to explore through my work with Rodale.com.”
“Childhood Obesity and Michelle Obama’s initiative to deal with it, is an important issue for all of Rodale’s readers and we are thrilled to have Marian Burros reporting on our behalf,” says Maria Rodale, Chairman & CEO of Rodale Inc. and Founding Editor of Rodale.com.
