Social Media and a Changing Readership Shape New Vision for Renowned Rodale Inc. Brand
May Issue Shares Tim Ferriss’ Strength Secrets in Debut Column and Details 24 Hours with Hafthor Bjornsson (“The Mountain” on Game of Thrones)
NEW YORK, NY – April 18, 2017 – Men’s Health, a Rodale Inc. brand, unveils a bold new editorial vision with the May 2017 issue, on newsstands today. With its simplified architecture, inventive new sections, and reinvigorated features, the new Men’s Health magazine is an authentic guidebook to life. It features informative and timely content infused with the energy of the internet, social media, and mobile apps.
“The role of the magazine has changed in a world overloaded with information, opportunity, and instant social media updates,” says Men’s Health Editor-in-Chief, Matt Bean. “The Men’s Health reader’s mindset has shifted too. He desires insightful information and shared experiences, not just recommendations. Men’s Health will now share more, educate more, and bring its reader to the front lines of the content it is covering.”
This is the debut issue for new Creative Director Mike Schnaidt. “Given our readers’ interest in exploration and experimentation, we wanted to draw inspiration from sources of crucial content, such as auto repair guides, hiking maps, and military field manuals,” explains Schnaidt. “Our visual vernacular will preserve an upscale look and feel but also be more authentic, adventurous, and current – what we call ‘sophisticated grit.’”
The magazine’s novel and refreshed components result in a seamless collaboration between print and digital. These sections include:
- “Unfiltered”: This new section unveils stirring photography related to a meaningful topic. In the May issue, images of 18 athletes who competed in the Wodapalooza fitness event showcase strength in all its forms. The story continues in a new digital franchise, “MH Longform,” featuring ambitious reporting paired with captivating video and photography.
- “The Exchange”: This addition to the magazine takes cues from online and mobile communication, with clever new platforms for dialogue between readers, editors and experts. Playful sidebars and brief info boxes include “Text a Doctor,” “Ask a Boy Scout,” “How-to Haiku,” “20-Second Solution” and “The Wordless Answer.”
- “Useful Stuff”: This revamped section is packed with topical takes on must-know info for men. It features advice from celebrated personalities and best-in-class voices, boasting a new column from self-help legend Tim Ferriss. In the May issue, he explains the importance of minimalism when it comes to building strength.
Other highlights from the May issue include the 2017 Performance Gear Awards, a guide to fine-tuning your suit style featuring Ricky Whittle of Starz’ American Gods, and a feature on Hafthor Bjornsson, famous for his role as Gregor “The Mountain” Clegane on Game of Thrones. He also appears in the debut episode of “MH Films,” a new online video franchise providing an all-access pass to the fittest, weirdest, and bravest men in the world.
