NATIONAL PARK SYSTEM ADVISORY BOARD

Baker on his appointment to chairman of the National Park System Advisory Board. In his new role, Baker will advise the Secretary of the Interior and the National Park Service Director on matters relating to the National Park Service, the National Park System, and programs administered by the National Park Service.

With more than 40 years in broadcasting, Baker has served as President and CEO of Thirteen/WNET since 1987. In February 2008, he will transition to emeritus status at WNET. WNET is PBS’ flagship station and the largest producer of culture and arts programming in the country. Prior to assuming his position at Thirteen, he was President of Westinghouse Television and Chairman of its cable and programming companies for 10 years.
During Baker’s tenure at Thirteen, the station has grown and prospered, creating new program standards such as Charlie Rose, City Arts and Religion and Ethics NewsWeekly. He established the Educational Resources Center, which has become America’s most prolific teacher trainer in multi-media techniques, and developed Thirteen’s first cable channel, MetroArts/Thirteen. He also helped stabilize the finances of the station by instituting the largest endowment in public television history. During his 10 years at Westinghouse, five cable networks were launched, including Discovery Channel and Disney Channel. He established the successful national PM MAGAZINE program and introduced Oprah Winfrey as a talk show host. He has been honored by the National Academy of Television Arts & Sciences with its national Trustee’s Emmy Award. He has won seven Emmys as a television producer, two Alfred I. duPont-Columbia Awards in Television and Radio Journalism, the Gabriel Award, and many others. Baker serves on the boards of College of St. Elizabeth, Lamont-Doherty Earth Observatory at Columbia University, Intrepid Sea Air Space Museum and Leitch Technology Corporation.
He holds bachelor, master and doctorate degrees from Case Western Reserve University, and four honorary doctorates.
