-Rodale’s Best Life and Organic Gardening Magazines Receive Honorable Mentions-

New York, NY, January 13, 2009 – Rodale Inc.’s Men’s Health and Women’s Health magazines were named the top two circulation performers of 2008, respectively, by Capell’s Circulation Report (CCR), it was announced today. Men’s Health, the world’s largest men’s magazine, was named #1, marking its twelfth overall appearance and sixth straight appearance on the list, while Women’s Health made an impressive debut on the list at #2. Rodale’s Organic Gardening magazine and Best Life magazine were also given Honorable Mentions by CCR.

“We are honored that CCR has recognized Men’s Health and Women’s Health at the top of a very impressive list of industry performers,” said Gregg Michaelson, EVP, Customer Marketing at Rodale. “Our editorial teams at both publications continue to produce the highest quality, unmatched health and wellness content, creating an unwavering demand for our magazines among this desirable audience of consumers. Add in the talent behind our subscription and retail marketing teams – who also have incredible insight into how best to reach these consumers – and the result is two products with impressive circulation stories and an ongoing ability to drive growth for Rodale.”

This marks Men’s Health‘s twelfth time on the list, the CCR record, it’s sixth consecutive year on the list and the fifth time Men’s Health has been ranked #1. CCR credits the magazine for once again selling “almost all of it’s subscriptions at full price” and delivering “huge bonus circ over rate base for its advertisers.” The January/February 2008 issue of Men’s Health sold 750,560 copies on the newsstand, the most in the history of the magazine, despite having raised the cover price from $4.50 to $4.99.

Debuting at #2 on the list, Women’s Health has become one of the fastest growing magazines in the country since it launched in October 2005 and has increased it’s rate base five times (currently 1.35 million effective with the Jan/Feb 2009 issue) in the magazine’s short history. Women’s Health adds CCR‘s recognition to a growing list of honors, which includes the No. 2 spot on Advertising Age‘s annual A-List and a No. 1 spot on Adweek‘s annual “10 Under 50” Hot List.

Best Life and Organic Gardening were also credited with having “terrific circulation years.” Best Life was credited with “19% newsstand gain in the last year and ad pages up 7% in 2008” while Organic Gardening was credited with 49% gain in newsstand sales and effective use of paid and controlled circulation,” according to CCR.

CCR‘s “Best Performers in Circulation 2008” list is based on all circulation statistics published in 2008 for all ABC audited consumer magazines. This data was then compared to 2006 and 2007 to determine which titles showed the greatest improvement. Rate base management, pricing, source mix, newsstand sales, audit reports and circulation performance in relation to the competitive environment surrounding the magazine were the key selection criteria. Advertising pages were used as an indicator of circulation and advertising working together.
