Ronan Gardiner Promoted to Vice President / Publisher of Men’s Health; Laura Frerer-Schmidt Promoted to Vice President / Publisher of Women’s Health

March 13, 2014 (New York, NY)—Rodale Inc., the world’s leading healthy lifestyle company, today announced that Men’s Health Publisher Ronan Gardiner and Women’s Health Publisher Laura Frerer-Schmidt have added Vice President to their titles. Within this role, both Gardiner and Frerer-Schmidt will continue to lead print and digital advertising sales and marketing efforts for their respective brands. Men’s Health is the best-selling men’s fitness and lifestyle magazine brand in the world and Women’s Health is the fastest-growing women’s magazine brand in the world.

Gardiner was named Publisher of Men’s Health in 2011 and has played an integral role in the business success of Men’s Health across print, digital and mobile platforms. In 2013, Men’s Health experienced its best ad page performance in five years, reporting an increase of 25% in pages. The title also increased ad revenue 35% and digital revenue increased more than 21% versus 2012.

Frerer-Schmidt, who joined Women’s Health as Publisher in 2011, is responsible for taking the brand’s advertising, sales and marketing functions to new heights. In her two years, Frerer-Schmidt led the team to record high ad sales and created successful revenue-driving marketing and advertiser initiatives that align seamlessly with the brand’s action-based platform, such as RUN10 FEED10—the award-winning, national philanthropic event that motivates consumers to help fight domestic hunger—which has provided 2.5 million meals to date.

In 2013, Women’s Health took the lead in its competitive set in advertising growth, ending the year up 32% in PIB pages, 37% in revenue, and 52% in digital sales. This marks the highest amount of pages and revenue in the brand’s history.

Digital sales and marketing innovations for Men’s Health and Women’s Health have resulted in record-breaking digital growth through February 2014—Women’s Health has secured a +145% increase in digital ad dollars YOY and Men’s Health 28% YOY.

Frerer-Schmidt and Gardiner recently launched multiplatform, year-long marketing programs to find the next faces of fitness. Both programs, the Women’s Health’s “Next Fitness Star” trainer competition, now in its second year, and Men’s Health’s “Next Top Trainer” competition, which launches this year, are sponsored by EAS Sports Nutrition and include print, digital, mobile and video platforms.

Also this year, Gardiner’s team created the “Search for the Ultimate Men’s Health Guy” presented by Kenneth Cole’s new fragrance, Mankind, which will offer the November 2014 cover to the winner for the first time in the magazine’s history. Frerer-Schmidt’s team created “WH Fit Club,” a new subscription based, interactive training site providing access to the most coveted workout studios and leading fitness experts across the country.

Gardiner joined Rodale as the Advertising Director of Men’s Health in 2005, quickly ascended to Associate Publisher of Men’s Health, and was again promoted to Associate Vice President and Associate Publisher of the brand in 2009. He joined Rodale after serving for three years as Advertising Director at Wenner Media’s Men’s Journal, and prior to that served as the Executive Director of Travel and Automotive for Condé Nast’s Gourmet magazine. Originally from the United Kingdom, Gardiner has lived in New York for more than 10 years. He relocated to the U.S. from Hong Kong, where he led the operations of media representation companies Matthews & Associates and Clinch Leece Advertising Sales for the Asia-Pacific region. An avid soccer player who loves to travel, Gardiner is an accomplished triathlete who has also completed Men’s Health‘s Urbanathlon every year since its inception.

Named Publisher of the Year by MIN in 2013, Frerer-Schmidt has been an influential member of the advertising community for more than 23 years. Prior to her role at Rodale, she worked at Condé Nast for 12 years at brands including Self, Vogue, Teen Vogue, W and Vanity Fair. Her roots in publishing began at age 11 when she started a thriving newspaper route in small town America. She currently resides in Brooklyn with her husband and two children and is training for the RUN10 FEED10 race in September.
